NASB | Luke 5:5 Simon answered and said, "Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but I will do as You say and let down the nets." |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Luke 5:5 Simon replied, "Master, we worked hard all night [to the point of exhaustion] and caught nothing [in our nets], but at Your word I will [do as you say and] lower the nets [again]." |
Bible Question: Can you assist me in understanding the NASB translation in Luke 5:4-5...Jesus is asking Peter to drop his "nets" (plural) in verse 4; then in verse 5 Peter told the Lord he would drop his "net" singular. The Greek Bible shows the Lord's request as plural and Peter's response on the nets as singular. Other translations show both as "nets" as well. I still like the NASB, but the KJV shows plural/singular on the nets. Just curious |
Bible Answer: God's day to you, dougs297, and welome to the SBF, Some would say that you are trying to strain out a gnat. However, I think every word in the Word is important. It is not just net/nets ... it is your nets/the net. Simon doesn't say my. Jesus saw two boats and the men washing their nets (v 2) ... I presume on the shore, not in the boat. Jesus told Simon to 'let down your nets for a catch' ... I think He wanted Simon to call James and John (second boat) to throw out their net, too. I am amazed that Simon put the net in the boat when he took Jesus offshore. I think he had only one net. I llok at John 21:6, where the boat had one net. I think Peter -put his foot in his mouth and thought he could do it himself -may have lacked faith that there would be any fish, so didn't want to waste time in getting the second boat out. -didn't want to force the issue. A side note ... the ‘Interlinear Literal Translation of the Greek New Testament’ has the plural-singular difference. The ‘ESV Interlinear and Nestle-Aland Greek New Testament 27th’ has the plural nets in both cases. What do you think? Share your questions and thoughts, Searcher |
