Bible Question:
Is my pastor wrong to teach on a Sunday morning in front of men, women, and teenagers about what a real man is? He mentioned that Hollywood and renown painters show men and Jesus as soft and effeminate. He intimated that he's a real man because he hunts, skiies, deals with his horses, cattle, and "passes gas". He said real men do not help w/dishes, change diapers, cuddle all the time, or go shopping w/the wife. He counselled some woman if that's what she wanted in a husband...she should marry a woman. Such men, he said, are wimps. He also told all the men in the church to say "We have tes------" (a man's body part). I almost came unglued! My husband does not like hunting deer, fishing, etc., but he does like to cook. So he was squirming during the sermon. My pastor is white, (I'm Black)we have "one church...two locations". The "church" I attend is predominantly Black. I felt the pastor was being myopic and insensitive to the Black congregation, as many cannot afford to hunt at deer leases, go skiig, deal with horses, cattle, etc. My pastor does not like for anyone to critique him...do you think I should speak to him to at least help him understand how he may have offended some of the men? Or, do I just continue to pray that God speak to him about what he should preach. He tells us that he does pray and feel "led" that this is going to be a 6 week series. I just hope it is not as graphic. Bereaniam |
Bible Answer: Bereaniam, God's day to you, Acts 17:11 gives an example of the Brereans examining the Scriptures to see if what was spoken matches Scripture. If he is preaching another Gospel as Paul warned us about in Galatians 1:6-9, he needs to go. If he said Jesus was soft and effeminate, he needs to prove it by Scripture, not Hollywood and renown painters ... or anyone else. DaVinci and others protray John as effeminate in appearance. I like Fabio looks effeminate. But, it does not make either less of a man. Oh - I think some paint or scuplt Jesus in an image they are comfortable with (maybe close to themselves or someone close). Charles Wesley wrote a hymn about Gentle Jesus, Meek and Mild. But, that doesn't make it true. Not does what Herrick, Mollenkott or others say. Study what the Bible says about our Lord - -He could have called more than twelve legions of angels (Mat 26:53). - That goes with last part of Revelation (19:1ff)which gives a picture of what He'll do when He returns. - He had made a scourge of cords, and drove out the people wrecking His Father's House (Luk 19:45-46, Jhn 2:14-16). - John 18:4-8 and the other Gospels tell about what happened when soldiers and others did when He spoke. ... this is a start. Maybe he needs to read the Bible to see what the Bible says about husbands including 1 Corinthians 7:3-4 and Ephesians 5:25-33 ... I doubt he understands what her love language is. Plus what the Bible says about him (1Ti 3:1-7, Tit 1:7-9) ... I wonder how well he manages his own family. If he offended you, apply Matthew 18:15ff. I never have a problem standing in the face of any preacher. Searcher |
