AMPLIFIED 2015 | Luke 22:17 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He said, "Take this and share it among yourselves; [Matt 26:26-29; Mark 14:22-25; 1 Cor 11:23-25] |
Bible Question: I was brought up church of christ, and using only one cup. But i have just now been studying about cups and i found this and i don't understand why only Luke talks about dividing the wine, and Matt and Mark make it sound like there was only one cup used? Can anyone help me? |
Bible Answer: In the ancient world (NT age), the ritual of passing around a cup of wine didn't present all the problems with which we deal in this modern world. There really shouldn't be anything wrong with a congregation of the Lord's family partaking from the same cup as is done in some groups. But it does come with some small risks as visitors and strangers come into the midst and might partake BUT they may leave something behind like tobacco juice or some form of disease or bacteria. So the modern practice of dividing the fruit of the vine into a multitude of cups is just a practical matter, just like "church buildings" and song books, the practice of Sunday School for Bible study, which are also not in the Bible. I hope this clears up the controversy, at least a little bit. God bless. |
