Bible Question: I know that the word repent has a compound definition and that is to ask for forgiveness and turn away from. If this is so is there forgiveness for sin done wilingly? Even if this person knows that they will commit this sin again? |
Bible Answer: Scripture ... Luke 5:20, 17:4; John 5:14, 8:11; Roms 10:9; 1 John 1:9 ... ydolomite, greetings. Metanoeo (repent) is a compound word, meaning change one's meind ... Meta (with, after, behind) and noeo (to perceive with the mind, to understand, to have understanding). In Luke 17:4, we are told to forgive a person seven times in one day ... each time they sin against us. When Jesus forgave sins, he did not always say to sin no more (Luke 5:20; John 5:14, 8:11). Homologeo is the Greek word for confess in 1 John 1:9. One meaning is "to concede" ... in Romans 10:9 confession with the mouth includes believing in the heart. Now does God forgive when we just say the words? I think that we need to be careful. When we confess our sins, we need to be willing not to commit that sin. Based on the context of 1 John 1:9, we will sin again. However, we must be willing to forgive those who sin against us, since we cannot judge their heart. Maybe, one of these times, they'd not sin against us. Hope this helps, Searcher |
