Bible Question:
Mark 10:17 As He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up to Him and knelt before Him, and asked Him, "Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" 18 And Jesus said to him, "Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone. How can Jesus, who even refuses to be called "good" could have allowed any one to worship him? Did not Jesus himself pray more than a dozen times to God, according to the Gospels? |
Bible Answer: Dear Isa, Jesus was not denying His own goodness but was forcing the man to recognize that his only hope was in total reliance on God, who alone can give eternal life. He may also have been encouraging the young man to consider the full identity and nature of the One he was addressing. In no way does this mean that Jesus is not "good" or that anyone should not be allowed to worship Him, who was in every way God Himself and never refused worship (John 20:28). Yes, Jesus prays to His Father in heaven, and this shows a 'distinction' between Father and Son, who both are part of the One Godhead of Christianity (along with the Holy Spirit). Nolan |
