AMPLIFIED 2015 | Matthew 8:2 And a leper came up to Him and bowed down before Him, saying, "Lord, if You are willing, You are able to make me clean (well)." [Mark 1:40-44; Luke 5:12-14] |
Bible Question:
Hello Tim Moran; I have a question for you concerning a particular word in Matt 8:2 “And a leper came to Him and bowed down before Him, and said, "Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean." The word is “willing” I have looked into it but would like an experts view of it. It is the word “Thelo”. My understanding of it is that this word does not simply mean “ desire, want to etc.” because it is so closly tied to the actual performing of the desire. In other words the desire and the performing of it cannot be seperated. They are almost the same thing in regard to this word. The reason this is significant to me is I wonder if the leper had the view of Jesus that the centurian had concerning Jesus’ authority. It seems to me that the leper knew who Jesus was and when he asked Jesus to cleanse him, he was basically saying “your will cannot but be accomplished, so if that is your will it will happen.” And what is the differenece between this word “Willing” and the word “will” in 1 John 5:14 “This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.” Blessing to you brother Aaron |
Bible Answer: Greetings Aaron! I'm back! I am sorry for the delay my friend, but I didn't have time to get back on the forum much this weekend. :-) You asked an excellent question. When I do a word study, I try to use good source material. But, I also try to look at how a word is used throughout Scripture. Sometimes, a particular verse will reveal that some of the statements made in the source materials are not quite accurate. For instance, there is evidence that God's 'will' or 'thelo' isn't always accomplished. Allow me to illustrate! 1 Tim. 2:4 tells us, "who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth." However, we know that not all me are saved and that all men have not come to a knowledge of the truth. Further, Mark 7:24 tells us, "Jesus left that place and went to the vicinity of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it; yet he could not keep his presence secret." Mt. 23:37 says, "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed (thelo) to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing." Therefore, 'thelo' can simply indicate 'desire'. Now, regardless, the leper definitely had to believe that Jesus was able to accomplish what He 'willed'. :-) 1 John 5:14 uses the noun 'thelema'. It is simply the noun form of the verb 'thelo'. I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
