Subject: Pure in Heart |
Bible Note: By the word "pure" we mean without contaminants, pollution, or undiluted. In the beatitudes our Lord is preaching in opposition to Pharisaism, which emphasized the external. The Lord always emphasizes the heart. He always begins with the heart. He always talks about the heart. Salvation by grace is a matter of a change of heart that God alone can do. The pure in heart are those whose love is singularly upon the Lord. Such hearts are not sullied with the love of temporal things. There is no competition for the heart from other things. The affections belong entirely to God. Indeed, anything that a man might love above the Lord is what we call idolatry. Consequently, loving God is understanding the true value of God Himself. "This desire is not a blind instinct or a fanatical impulse, but springs from an intelligent apprehension of the excellency of the nature of Christ, as transcending every thing known to man, more than the holy anointing oil of the sanctuary surpassed any other perfume; an excellence so rich, that the pure in heart, and they only, love Him, and they cannot do otherwise than love Him." --John Owen "And are there any that now hear me, who think themselves to be Christians, who do yet, either in their imaginations and thoughts, or in any secret practice, allow and indulge the lust of uncleanness, and live in such a way? If it be so, they had great need to bethink themselves whether or no they are not of that generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet are not cleansed from their filthiness. If they imagine that they are pure in heart, and live in such wickedness, their confidence is vain presumption. Inquire whether holy exercises and holy employments are the delight of your soul, and what you take pleasure in above all other things in which you can be engaged. Are the enjoyments that you choose, and take the greatest delight in, spiritual and heavenly enjoyments? Is the seeing of God, and conversing with Him, and dwelling in His presence forever, what you should of your own accord choose above all other things?" --Jonathan Edwards "It is safe to tell the pure in heart that they shall see God, for only the pure in heart want to." --C.
