Bible Question (short): Is simple honesty in conflict w/ signing |
Question (full): Jesus said "But let your statement be, 'Yes, yes' or 'No, no'; anything beyond these is of evil." (Matthew 5:37 NASB). I take this as more than just swearing. It ought also to apply to promises in that saying "I promise" should not show our word to be true where otherwise we can't be trusted. Now, if it applies to more than just swearing, then it seems to me that we need to remove from our lives everything we do because our yes can't be taken as yes and our no as no. So then what of signing papers? My signature is required because it can be used to prove in court that I agreed to something. Is that not more than my yes being my yes, that I have to give proof for fear that I'm lying? But then the same doesn't seem to apply to locking our doors if you read of the locked gate in Acts 12. Locking doors is often a matter of not trusting others, right? And if we're going to expect them to trust us then shouldn't we trust them? I don't understand. |
