NASB Matthew 5:3 ¶ "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
AMPLIFIED 2015 Matthew 5:3 ¶ "Blessed [spiritually prosperous, happy, to be admired] are the poor in spirit [those devoid of spiritual arrogance, those who regard themselves as insignificant], for theirs is the kingdom of heaven [both now and forever]. [Luke 6:20-23]

Subject:  Poor in spirit

Bible Note:  3 "Blessed are the poor (destitute – same word used of the beggar named Lazarus, the root means to cringe or cower) in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Isaiah 66:2 “For all those things My hand has made, And all those things exist," Says the LORD. "But on this one will I look: On him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, And who trembles at My word.”

Those who cringe, who tremble at the LORD’s word. This is a deep, inner response as I recognize my complete and utter lack of anything good, before the Righteous and Holy God.

Ps 34:18 The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit.”

Isaiah 57:15 “For thus says the High and Lofty One Who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: "I dwell in the high and holy place, With him who has a contrite and humble spirit, To revive the spirit of the humble, And to revive the heart of the contrite ones.”

God says that of all the things He has made, what captures His attention is the poor and contrite spirit. These are the ones God causes to live. These are the ones that live with God.

Poverty is my true state before God. The poor aren’t checking their own pockets for what they need, they already know whats there – nothing! Maybe its that we can only have one or the other, either we fill our hands with what the world calls riches, or we recognize that its not worth a thing, and we let go, to find that our hands are filled with the true riches from God. Those are the happy ones!

Love in Christ,
Mark
