Bible Question:
Greetings Forum! There has been a lot of discussion over the years concerning the Sermon on the Mount in general and the Beatitudes in particular. Let me ask these questions: What is the purpose of the Sermon on the Mount? What is the meaning of the Beatitudes? Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
Bible Answer: The Sermon on the Mount was preached to the Lord's Disciples. It reveals the standard of righteousness that Christ requires of all who belong to Him (5:1). It also elaborates on what our Lord called His new commandment - to love one another. This revelation of a true life of holiness also creates in the honest heart an awareness of coming "short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). Since it is impossible for the human nature ever to fulfill this high standard of inner righteousness, the honest heart will be driven to utter despair to Jesus Himself. He alone can cause the righteousness of the law to be fulfilled in our lives. The Sermon on the Mount can be, along with the Ten Commandments, be called the school master for our lives. prayon (exert from Matthew BSF lesson 7). |
