NASB | Matthew 27:7 And they conferred together and with the money bought the Potter's Field as a burial place for strangers. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Matthew 27:7 So after consultation they used the money to buy the Potter's Field as a burial place for strangers. |
Bible Question: This question was asked in 2001, but did not get a satisfactory answer, so I'd like to ask it again. How did Judas die? In Matthew it says he hanged himself and the chief priests bought the field, but in Acts it says Judas bought the field where he fell and died. Does anyone have a comment on this apparent conflict in verses? |
Bible Answer: CMMiller, It is well understood how others can perform tasks for someone else acting as their agent, especially if they are disabled or dead. Mat 27 5Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself. 6But the chief priests took the silver pieces and said, "It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, because they are the price of blood." 7And they consulted together and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in. 8Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day. 9Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying, "And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the value of Him who was priced, whom they of the children of Israel priced, 10and gave them for the potter's field, as the LORD directed me."[Jeremiah 32:6-9] Acts 1 16"Men and brethren, this Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus; 17for he was numbered with us and obtained a part in this ministry." 18(Now this man purchased a field with the wages of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his entrails gushed out. 19And it became known to all those dwelling in Jerusalem; so that field is called in their own language, Akel Dama, that is, Field of Blood.) 20"For it is written in the Book of Psalms: "Let his dwelling place be desolate, And let no one live in it';[Psalm 69:25] The question is really of whose name went on the deed to the property? Who would doubt that it was Judas' name on the deed? Yes Judas fell, after a time his body fell. Are you asking whether the rope, his neck, or the tree gave way? Whatever, it does not change the fact that he hung himself. Pastor Glenn |
