Subject: Does Mt. 22:39 assume self-love? |
Bible Note: Hello prayon Actually, (and I should have stated this in the previous post) the key is John 13:34 (ESV) A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. We are commanded to have the same love as the Lord Jesus Christ does. So when we look at loving your neighbor as yourself, we see a very incomplete love. We are called to have the ultimate self-sacrificing love. I am not a good person, neither am I worthy of Christ's love (Rom 3:10-18). It is only by Christ imparting His worth on me that I have any merit. We have several examples in Scripture of people who were depressed and/or wanted death--Elijah, Jeremiah, Naomi, Job. What was their problem? They dwelt on their circumstances. "Poor me!" And I never said believers don't go through this. They do. I have. It's just an understanding of what it is. Steve |
