Bible Note: Dear Makarios: An admirable quality that I have long admired in the Lockman Foundation -- and it has many -- is their willingness, even eagerness, to respond favorably, fairly and objectively to thoughful and constructive criticism and suggestions from the readers of their products. For example, a few years ago I posed a question to them concerning the phraseology of a verse in Ecclesiastes. I simply couldn't understand why they rendered the verse the way they did. Their response came promptly and in considerable detail. They explained the Hebrew text and listed various options of translation that the Hebrew afforded, then further explained why they chose the particular one that appears in the NASB after having weighed all options carefully and arriving at a consensus that the locution that appears in the 1995 NASB Update more accurately translates the Hebrew text. Not only did their scholarly explanation give me a far deeper understanding of the passage than I ever had before, but it gave me as well an added respect for the quality and literal accuracy of the NASB and for the diligence and integrity of the team of translators who gave to this translation the very best that was in them. I thought then and think now that translators who were so conscientious as to take the time and pains to respond with such grace and thoroughness to a lone and not very significant reader must indeed be among the rarest of the rare in this age. My subsequent dealings with the Lockman Foundation have served to corroborate this initial felicitous experience. My deep and abiding respect for Lockman, their aims and dedication to excellence in translating God's word, encourages me to do my best and to encourage other users to do their best as members of this team, Lockman's Study Bible Forum. --Hank |
