AMPLIFIED 2015 | Matthew 19:16 ¶ And someone came to Him and said, "Teacher, what [essentially] good thing shall I do to obtain eternal life [that is, eternal salvation in the Messiah's kingdom]?" [Lev 18:5; Mark 10:17-30; Luke 18:18-30] |
Bible Question: Why did Jesus' answers varied when asked the same question? In Matt. 19:16, the rich man asked him, "What must I do to inherit eternal life? In Luke 10:25, a lawyer asked him the same thing. Jesus told the rich man to sell all and give to the poor and then follow him. He told the lawyer to love his neighbor as himself. |
Bible Answer: It means they different person, the rich man is rich and the lawyer maybe is not rich as the rich man mentioned. Aside from that the answer given to the rich man is specific for him, otherwise all the rich man of todays Christians will going to sell properties. If we have the same commandments as the rich man you and me should sell all our properties and follow Him. But if we study the two different answers is the same. Love God with all thy heart and soul and strength are same as selling your properties and follow Jesus. If we love God with all our everything, do you think we owned a single centavo? it is for God? Serve Him with all your everything. So the answer of Jesus Christ for that rich man (aside from Christ knew what is in the heart of the rich man when he asked this question) is very specific for him otherwise all rich man has to sell thier properties enable to inherit eternal life. Although it Christ also said that it very hard to a rich man to go to heaven: Mt 19:24 And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. The answer to the lawyer is for everyone: Mt 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. Mt 22:39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Here is the verses that has an advice to the rich: 1Ti 6:17 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; The advice to them is to be fair not to sell all thier goods and properties. God bless, |
