Bible Question: What conclusion do we arrive at when Matthew 18:15 says "And if your brother sins(against you),go and reprove him in private" with 1 Corinthians 13:7 (love)"bears all things" when the Greek word "stega" Strongs # 4722 means "to conceal or hide (totally and completely) as if no offense "ever" occured? Please note "against you" was added by later manuscripts and was not in the earliest manuscripts. Also note that The Lockman Foundation has not added "against you" to their latest texts. P.S. I am doing a Greek study on agape-love and am trying to reconcile I Corinthians 13 "the love chapter" with Matthew 18:15. |
Bible Answer: Scripture ... Deu 17:1-7, 19:15-21; Matt 5:21-26, 18:1-35; Gal 6:1-6; 1 Cor 13:7 ... God's day to you, Rick Gowdy, "Against you" does fit "against me" in verse 21. I think if we remove "against you" we can look at the context of the whole chapter. The sin of causing one to stumble (vv 6ff) is grevious. It love to correct a brother - restoration is the desire in Matthew 18. Galatians 6 comes to mind in the method. Now if they refuse to be corrcted from causing the stumbling ... I think of false teachers ... then you need to get 2 or 3 witnesses. In the OT (Deu 17:1-7, 19:15-21) 2 or 3 witnesses were used to remove the evil and impose a death penalty. I see the same thing in Matthew 18, expect no death penalty. God wants the evil purged ... and if we don't remove it, we do not love. Read the contect of 1 Timothy 5:19 and Hebrews 10:28. 1 Corinthians 13:7 also says to believe all things. So we are not to gossip about a brother who is sinning, but are to follow Matthew 18. There may be other verses to add to support this. Searcher PS Notice the presence of the Lord (before the Lord) in the OT. He was there for the judgment and I think what it means in Matthew 18. |
