Bible Question: Explain the transfiguration of Christ. What was it; what was its purpose? |
Bible Answer: Hank, the transformation is both a startling and powerful event in the life of Christ. It has significance in the story of God's redemption of humanity and it reveals to the disciples something of the divine glory that Jesus enjoyed with His Father from the beginning of time. The transformation took place at night, on a high mountain (Matt 17:1) when our Lord was praying (luke 9:28). The mountain was probably Mount Herman near Caesarea Philippi which was about 9,400 feet in height. After Peter's confession Jesus took a time out from His ministry to pour out His needs to the Father for wisdom, confirmation, guidance and strength. He knew that the Cross was fast approaching. Undoubtedly He also prayed for His disciples that they would understand what was to come. There were many things accomplished by the Transformation. 1) Christ's glory was revealed to the disciples. Isaiah said in 53:2 that "he had no form or majesty that we should look at Him, nothing in His appearance that we should desire Him." No external marks of any type distinguished Jesus as being the Messiah. It was when the disciples saw Jesus transformed that they had their confirmation that Jesus truly was the Son of God. 2) The transformation was also a confirmation to Jesus that He was on the right road and had His Father's full approval. 3) The transformation also allowed Jesus to get the strength to He would need to get through the days ahead. It is believed He did this through the fellowship with Moses and Elijah. **It is interesting to note that it was suggested that Jesus could of returned to heaven at that time, for He was without sin and death had no power over Him. 4) God revealed Himself through His "Shekinah" glory and commanded the disiples to hear and obey His Son. prayon |
