AMPLIFIED 2015 | Matthew 12:40 for just as JONAH WAS THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS IN THE BELLY OF THE SEA MONSTER, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. [Jon 1:17] |
Bible Question: Jonah is referred to as a sign to the Pharisees and the Lawyers in the Gospels, the sign, three days and three nights in the belly of the earth as the picture of Jonah being three days in the belly of the great fish. The question, can one advance the idea that Jonah actually died, and was made alive again? The references to the grave seem to point to death, then Jonah after this is going through the city saying repent. What say? |
Bible Answer: Something that might help clarify and edify what has already been said here. A former doctrine professor of mine had a newspaper clipping dated back in the 50's if memory serves, from a mediteranean newspaper that speaks of a fishing boat being tossed around and that a sailor fell overboard. He was swallowed by a whale, and believed dead. The fishing boat found the whale 4 days later and caught it. When they cut it open, they found their crew mate inside the whale still alive. His skin was very pale and sickly from the stomach acids eating away at his skin. It took him a few days to recover. This story gave credibility to the Book of Jonah that such an event really could have happened. |
