Bible Question:
Way was Mary chosen as the mother of Jesus? At time of spirtual conception, Were Joseph and Mary married or not? In Matthew 1:18-19 It describes Joseph and Mary as being "pledged", then goes on to say that "Joseph her Husband" contemplated divorce to save her from disgrace. Thank-you very much inadvance. |
Bible Answer: "Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost." Matthew 1:18 (KJV) There were three steps in a Jewish marriage. First, the two families agreed to the union. Second, a public announcement was made. At this point known as betrothal, the woman was said to be "espoused" to the man. This was similar to engagement today except that their relationship could be broken only through death or divorce (even though sexual relations were not yet permitted). Third the couple was married and began living togeter. In other words Mary and Joseph were not married yet, they were "engaged". |
