Subject: Was Jesus a Nazirite? |
Bible Note: Another good answer Steve! :) Yes, Nazarene and Nazirite both sound and look almost identical! I couldn't help but to laugh after you had so cleverly pointed this out! :) I agree.. Jesus drank wine, and this alone excludes Him from being 'separated' from society, so that He could fulfill His mission. For it was not part of His mission to devote Himself in this way, but to carry out what the Father had called Him to do, part of which was to 'eat and drink with sinners and tax collectors', even though He was the very Son of God! Yes, I agree that He could have taken a Nazirite vow at some point in His life, but that was not part of His mission or His plan. As for Matthew 2:23, the phrase, "He shall be called a Nazarene" is not found in the OT. The Ryrie Expanded Edition Study Bible comments on this verse, "Based on the sense of several OT prophecies (notice the plural prophets). Nazarene is probably a synonym for "contemptible" or "despised" since Nazareth was a most unlikely place for the residence of the Messiah (cf. Isaiah 53:3; Psalm 22:6)." Good Study! Nolan |
