Bible Question: Was Jesus a Nazirite? |
Bible Answer: Nolan ... I say Jesus was not a Nazirite. A Nazirite is quite different from a Nazarene. A Nazarene is an inhabitant of Nazareth, but a Nazirite is a Jew who has taken special vows In Matthew 2:23, we read that Mary, Joseph, and the child Jesus settled in Nazareth, in order "... that what was spoken through the prophets might be fulfilled, 'He shall be called a Nazarene.'" I can not find this prophecy in the Old Testament. Jesus drank wine (Matthew 26:29, Mark 14:25, Luke 22:18), so could not have been a life-long Nazirite. Some say that Christ's vow to not drink from the fruit of the vine, right after, He placed Himself under the vow of the Nazirite. But, that is only one of the three parts. He could of taken the Nazirite vow during His lifetime, on earth. But, we do not know. His 40 day fast probably was not a vow. I hope both of these answers satisfy you. Searching Scripture Steve |
