NASB | Numbers 24:9 "He couches, he lies down as a lion, And as a lion, who dares rouse him? Blessed is everyone who blesses you, And cursed is everyone who curses you." |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Numbers 24:9 "He bowed down [to rest], he lies down as a lion; And as a lioness, who dares to rouse him? Blessed [of God] is he who blesses you, And cursed [of God] is he who curses you." [Matt 25:40] |
Bible Question: Shouldn't it read "crouched" instead of "couches?" I paid a fortune for my Bible and I'd hate to think there is a typo in it! |
Bible Answer: The Hebrew word is "kara," which means "to bow down," or "cause to lie down." Some translations have this passage translated as "crouches," but I think in this case "couch" is correct. The meaning is to lie down, not to crouch (which is synonymous with squat). Note the context of the verse: the lion is lying down, and who will dare to wake him up? "Crouch" doesn't fit here. Genesis 49:9 is a comparable verse, in which "kara" is also translated "couches." |
