Bible Question: Why did Abram tithe to Melchisedec, levites tithe to Aaron? |
Bible Answer: Abram was honoring Melchisedec not giving to God. Tithing was a ancient custom as a way of honoring a person. When God instituted the tithe so that the there would be sufficient funds to accomplish his ministry, the people understood this as a way to honor God. Today the tithe is to be paid to honor God. Many men have corrupted this in an effort to insure they get your money they have changed the teaching and claim it as sowing into a ministry or a person. Then they expand on this and say if you sow in good soil you will get a good return etc. However the tithe is to be paid to God as an act or worship, it is to be placed before Him as show of honor and reverence to God. Nothing should be expected in return, however God does promise that if we will bring into his storehouse (a ministry He is using as a steward) we will open the windows of heaven and pour out blessings upon us. Those blessing may be money but they can also be spiritual blessings, or physical blessing like good health, drug free kids, etc. Again the object of giving is not to get the blessing but rather to pay honor to God.
