Bible Question:
How is the tithe to be used? Is the tithe for the support of the fulltime Ministers or for the purchase or up kept of the building and utilities or a combinination of both? Did not God give the tithe to the levites as an inheirtance forever? When Moses gave instructions for the Tabernacle in the wilderness, the tribes were commanded to bring an offering for the construction material not a tithe. When Solomon built the Temple, he did not use the tithe to do it. The tribes brought offerings sufficient for the task. Did not the priest recieve offerings from the tribes to pay for the sacrifices that had to be made during the different feast? Is not the tithe to be used for the material support of fulltime Ministers of the Gospel and not to built buldings or pay utilities. I ask these questions because Abram gave tithe to Melchisedec and the the children of Isreal gave tithe to the levites who gave tithe to Aaron. Melchisedec did not use the money for buliding projects, nor did the levites or Aaron. |
Bible Answer: Hewesq The tithe is to be used for more than the support of the pastor. It is used to support the ministry. This includes the support of the Pastor. The ministry also included benevolence (widows and orphans, homeless, needy etc.) , missions (both foreign and local), material for education, and yes the building and utilities. If these weren’t paid from the tithe where do you expect them to come from. Remember a very small percentage of the people actually tithe. You evidently have a problem with how your church is using the tithe. This happens, since non perfect humans are involved. Money and money issues have destroyed more than it’s share of churches and ministries. We have all seen abuses where people get carried away and build ridiculously expensive buildings for no apparent reason, other times they pay their pastor either far too much or far too little. Or they give nothing to missions or benevolence. The tithe is given to God and the church is to be the steward of this money, whether it be done by the Pastor alone, a council of elders or vote by the congregation. God will judge each and every church on how well they handled that money. EdB |
