Bible Question:
Shalom y'all, I have been reading Numbers and am at Num. 14:13-14, and I got to wondering about the pillars of cloud and fire I can't recall reading the answer anywhere. In this verse Moses says that the Egyptians have heard how God walks among the children of Israel and about the pillars of cloud and fire. What I'm wondering is this...During the years in the wilderness, was that cloud visible to others? Caravans of other travellers passing by at a distance, would they have been able to see the cloud? especially the pillar of fire by night, would that have been noticeable to them? Cheri |
Bible Answer: Dear Cheri, God doesn't do things "in a corner" (Acts 26:26b). He acts both then and now to bring glory to His name (Joshua 4:24; Deuteronomy 28:10; 1 Kings 8:43). Moses himself asserts that the acts of the Lord were known to the nations (Numbers 14:15). We also have testimony of others in Scripture who knew what God was doing (Exodus 15:14-16; Joshua 2:8-11; 9:1, 3; Numbers 22:2). As you've pointed out, it would be hard to hide that many people. As Balak described them, "they cover the face of the earth" (Numbers 22:5). As to the visibility of the pillar, there is no indication that it was anything other than as described. The Scriptures, by default, use phenomenological language, painting verbal pictures of things as they appeared. In Him, Doc |
