Subject: Do we tithe on our net or gross? |
Bible Note: Good morning Johnny, Last night as I was doing my nightly reading (been reading Luke this week), guess what I read? On tithing (coincidence? I don't believe in coincidences). Here is a passage where Jesus said we need to tithe. "But woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone." (Luke 11:42). Jesus confirms that they need to tithe without leaving the others undone. A tithe means 10percent, anything above 10percent is an offering. God told everyone to tithe, rich and poor. Tithing is not for God's benefit or the Pastors benefit but for our benefit. When I started tithing 10percent. I was going into debt every month. It was not the tithe but my life style that pushed me over (I could only afford 2percent tithe - This was the first place I wanted to cut :o)). In 7months I came out of debt, literally supernaturally. Nothing I did differently except start tithing 10percent, not 8percent or 2percent. God is very particular, remember how detailed Jesus was when He fed the multitude (sit down in 50's etc.). In the same way the amount 10percent is very significant (we don't know all God's reasoning behind 10percent. God did not just decide on 10 for no reason). Yes, when we give God looks at the heart. So I wouldn't challenge God's 10 (tithe) by giving 2percent, and then telling God that this is my "tithe". It would be very easy to justify why I can only give 2 with worldly logic. But God knows everything. If we really get down to it, do we have to drive that car, live in that house, or eat that food? "seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you." (Matt. 6:33). I pray that the LORD reveals this to you In the Living Vine |
