Subject: Nazirite can't drink wine? |
Bible Note: Exactly! Abstinence from wine served as one of the three public testimonies of a Nazirite's dedication to God. I believe that such a prohibition from drinking for the Nazirite is an admonition from God to protect the Nazirite, much like 'do not run with a sharp object' is an admonition to a child. Therefore, a Nazirite is assumed and expected to be blameless in this area, to be 'holy to the Lord' during all the days of his or her (a woman could also be a Nazirite- v. 2) separation from the rest of Jewish society. As you have conscientiously pointed out, Steve, this admonition is to protect a Nazirite against such an occurrence that happened with Noah (Gen. 9:21) who was also a righteous man. Examples of Nazirites were Samson (Judg. 13), Samuel (1 Sam. 1:9-11), John the Baptist (Luke 1:15,80), and Paul (Acts 18:18). Thank you Steve for another Scripture filled answer! |
