Bible Question: Why was it forbidden for a Nazirite to drink wine? |
Bible Answer: Nolan ... It forbidden for a Nazirite to drink wine because God said so. Maybe because even grape juice affected the mind, the incident with Noah (Gen. 9:21) ... but, these a guesses. It is one of three prohibitions of a Nazirite, by God's word (Num. 6:1-8) (1) no alcohol, including all products of the grape vine (2) have uncut hair (3) no contact with the dead These requirements were treated as external signs of a vow. Most of the time, taking the Nazirite was temporal. Only Samson (Judges 13:7) and John (Luke 1:15-17) were in it for life. When the period of the vow ended, the Nazirite then burned his shaven hair and presented a number of offerings to God (Num. 6:10-21). |
