Bible Question: ok.. I understand that.. but what about the firstfruits of our income... what will that be. example.. If I make two thousand dollars before taxes and tithe 10percent of that which will be 200 hundred dollars, what should my firstfruits be of that 2000? |
Bible Answer: Hi 12pvchecks, In the OT, every individual was required to consecrate to God a portion of the first-fruits of the land (Ex. 22:29; 23:19; 34:26; Num. 15:20, 21). There is no NT useage of the term "firstfruits" in relation to giving. I think the principle is similar- even synonymous- to the 10 percent giving as you mentioned. I think we could make that inference, but I don't know what "the firstfruits of your income" should be as scripture doesn't explicitly provide an answer. I don't see any cut-and-dried formula on this. Check out 2 Cor. 9:6-12: "But this I say, He that soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he that soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. 7Let each man do according as he hath purposed in his heart: not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. 8And God is able to make all grace abound unto you; that ye, having always all sufficiency in everything, may abound unto every good work: 9as it is written, He hath scattered abroad, he hath given to the poor; His righteousness abideth for ever. 10And he that supplieth seed to the sower and bread for food, shall supply and multiply your seed for sowing, and increase the fruits of your righteousness: 11ye being enriched in everything unto all liberality, which worketh through us thanksgiving to God. 12For the ministration of this service not only filleth up the measure of the wants of the saints, but aboundeth also through many thanksgivings unto God;" I hope this helps, BradK |
