AMPLIFIED 2015 | Leviticus 19:18 'You shall not take revenge nor bear any grudge against the sons of your people, but you shall love your neighbor (acquaintance, associate, companion) as yourself; I am the LORD. [Matt 5:43-46; Rom 12:17, 19] |
Bible Question: Matthew 22 mentions that the greatest commandments are loving God with all your heart, and loving your neighbor as yourself. Where else is it cited to love yourself? |
Bible Answer: Hi The Bible does not tell us to love ourselves, it assumes that we do so. What it does seek to do is make us look outward from loving ourselves, to loving other to an equal extent. It is paralleled by Jesus words about doing to others what we would want them to do to us (Matthew 7.12). Of course Jesus took this one step further and pointed out that we had to deny ourselves, take up the cross and follow Him (Mark 8.34 and parallels). In other words we must die to ourselves and live for Him, and thus for others (Romans 6.10-11). |
