Bible Question:
Leviticus 12:5 speaks of the ucleanness of 66 days for a woman giving birth to a female child, the previous verse speaks of 33 days for a male child anyone have an explanation as to why this is? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Tigris, Here is a bit of commentary on Leviticus 12:5.. "12:1-8 Uncleanness is related to the mother's afterbirth, not the child." (1) "12:5 two weeks...sixty-six days. Apparently mothers were unclean twice as long (80 days) after the birth of a daughter as a son (40 days), which reflected the stigma on women for Eve's part in the Fall. This stigma is removed in Christ (see note on 1 Tim. 2:14,15)." (1) "12:1-8 The birth of a child, though a happy occasion, was a reminder that sin is transmitted to each person. Thus the mother was banned from performing religious duties for 40 days (in the case of a baby boy) or 80 days (in the case of a baby girl). After this time she had to bring a burnt offering and a sin offering. See note on Luke 2:24 concerning Mary's offering." (2) "12:6 The sacrifices required were the same for a son or a daughter, showing that God places equal value upon both sexes and that He intends His people to do the same..."
