Bible Question:
Why was Jehu punished for doing the Lord's bidding (2Ki 9:6-10)? ... read all of 2 Kings 9. |
Bible Answer: Greetings Steve! Here is a little to help answer your question.. "bloodshed of Jezreel: In 841 B.C. Jehu, with God’s approval, destroyed the evil dynasty of Omri by slaughtering Jezebel, the sons of Ahab, and the prophets and priests of Baal (see 2 Kin. 9; 10)." (Nelson NKJV Study Bible) "Hos 1:4 - Jezreel--that is, "God will scatter" (compare Zec_10:9). It was the royal city of Ahab and his successors, in the tribe of Issachar. Here Jehu exercised his greatest cruelties (2Ki_9:16, 2Ki_9:25, 2Ki_9:33; 2Ki_10:11, 2Ki_10:14, 2Ki_10:17). There is in the name an allusion to "Israel" by a play of letters and sounds." (Jamieson, Fausset and Brown Commentary) "1:4-5 Each of the children of this pair is given a name symbolic of Israel’s disobedience and violation of the covenant relationship with God. Jezreel (God sows) points to the harvest of judgment that God is about to bring on the kingdom of Israel, and is also the name of the city which was the residence of the kings of Israel (1 Kings 18:45-46; 21:1), and the place where the wicked Queen Jezebel was put to death by Jehu (2 Kings 9:30-37) when he ruthlessly installed himself as king of Israel (2 Kings 9-10). Now his dynasty (house) is about to be destroyed." (Cambridge Annotated Study Bible) "1:4 “Jezreel” means “God sows.” The “bloodshed of Jezreel” refers to the bloodthirsty acts of Jehu recorded in 2 Kin. 9; 10. The prophecy has two stages of fulfillment: (1) the demise of the house of Jehu with the murder of Zechariah (2 Kin 15:10) and (2) the fall of Samaria and the scattering of Israel into exile (2 Kin 17:5, 6)." (Believer's Study Bible) "1:4 Jezreel means “God sows” and refers to a valley in northern Israel, the scene of Jehu’s ill-advised and wrongly motivated murder of the sons of Ahab in order to seize the throne (2 Kings 10:1-11). put an end to . Fulfilled by the Assyrian captivity in 722 B.C. and prophesied to Jehu (2 Kings 10:30)." (Ryrie Expanded Edition Study Bible) Jehu was carrying out God's Will by putting an end to the family of Ahab, but he was doing this with wrong motives and his own agenda in mind. --Nolan |
