Bible Question: Why is it acceptible to call ourselves children of the most high God but not little gods? |
Bible Answer: Hi, LisaT! It is true that Yahweh calls His children (Israel) gods or holy ones... it is also true that Jesus made reference to just such passage in the Sacred Scripture... but we have such great problems as it is (not thinking ourselves as "gods") that if we begin to rely on the word "god" as a descriptive adjective of who we are, would we not condemn ourserlves much more quicker by our over inflated egos? God made us is in His image and likeness--He breathed into us His Spirit making us as He: essence of His essence: little gods. But this is our legacy, not our spiritual state. We are called to be holy and to be perfect for God is Holy and Perfect. But, as Paul says, we are not yet what we can be: Now we see only reflections in a mirror, mere riddles, but then we shall be seeing face to face. Now I can know only imperfectly; but then I shall know just as fully as I am myself known. (1 Corinthians 13:12) Now I am going to tell you a mystery: we are not all going to fall asleep, but we are all going to be changed, instantly, in the twinkling of an eye, when the last trumpet sounds. The trumpet is going to sound, and then the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed, because this perishable nature of ours must put on imperishability, this mortal nature must put on immortality. (1 Corinthians 15:51-53) Are we little gods? Just ponder the mediums of cyberspace, telecommunication, entertainment, science, and commerce... no matter how hard Darwin pushes that monkey, err, I mean that chimpanzee, he will never get the chimps to design the next wave of supercomputers--they were not awarded the image and likeness of God! We are little gods in the sense that we have the built in potential to be children of God! But Jesus clearly warned: I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me, with me in him, bears fruit in plenty; for cut off from me you can do nothing. (John 15:5) John attests to this in this manner: My dear friends, we are already God's children, but what we shall be in the future has not yet been revealed. We are well aware that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he realy is. (1 John 3:2) God Bless! Angel |
