Bible Note: Barry, the Scripture reference you gave as 1 Cor.14:8 was I'm quite sure meant to be 14:18. Paul did not say he prayed in tongues but spoke in tongues. Paul's chief discourse in this chapter concerns "a tongue" -- the singular, indicating that it refers to the false gibberish of the counterfeit, pagan ecstatic speech. In verse 18, he uses the plural "tongues" and it refers not to the previously-discussed babble but to intelligible speech, real human languages. --Hank |
