Bible Question:
I would like to better understand Idolatry in the modern, western context. I recall hearing that, Idolatry is anything that takes the place of God in our life, but can't find scriptural references for that explanation. I read Psa 106:39 in the NLT which says, their love of idols was adultery in the Lord's sight - this has prompted further questioning of what idolatry means to those of us who would not dream of having, for example, a metal or stone idol statue in our home and worshipping that. |
Bible Answer: Hi, Sanna... Welcome to the forum! The idea of an idol being a statue or picture, is certainly an accurate one. You can do a word study on idol and see that for yourself. However, you'll soon discover that worshiping figurines is only a small aspect of idolatry. Idol worship is imputing less value to God than that which He deserves. It is an issue of man's heart (1 Samuel 15:23), a moral issue (Romans 1:19-24), and an aspect of the fruit of the flesh (Galatians 5:19-21). If you would like to read an excellent discussion of idolatry, read "Knowing God" by J. I. Packer. In Him, Doc |
