NASB | Isaiah 8:10 "Devise a plan, but it will be thwarted; State a proposal, but it will not stand, For God is with us." |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Isaiah 8:10 "Take counsel together [against Judah], but it will come to nothing; Speak the word, but it will not stand, For God is with us (Immanuel)." |
Bible Question:
This is a QUESTION about speaker and time. In Isaiah 8: 9 Who is speaking here? In the NLT the speaker is Assyria, but to me this does not make sense since God with us is "Immanuel." As I read this passage, it strikes me that Islam claims this (god is with us) as well. Also, verses 16 -18 suggest (to me) that although the Jews were swept away into captivity BC, they remain captive to the blindness that God has allowed to descend upon them still today. Might we see this passage as future tense, rather than history past? Comments? |
Bible Answer: Mommapbs First this has nothing to do with Islam since the false religion of Islam never came into existence until a 1000 years later. In verse 9 and 10 it is Assyria talking and they are saying we will overrun you since God has given you to us, do to your sin. It wasn't "Immanuel" but rather "Maher-shalal-hash-baz" swift to plunder. Verses 16-18 ties back to verse 14 which is prophetic of Jesus, the Stone upon which they will stumble. There is also a promise of National restoration which I think is yet to be fulfilled. Israel has returned physically to the land of which they were promises but they have not returned spiritually to the God that has given them that land. Future events will occur that will turn them from there present humanistic stance back to God. EdB |
