AMPLIFIED 2015 | Isaiah 59:19 So they will fear the name of the LORD from the west And His glory from the rising of the sun. For He will come in like a narrow, rushing stream Which the breath of the LORD drives [overwhelming the enemy]. [Matt 8:11; Luke 13:29] |
Bible Question: Reading the KJV of Is59:19,why do they use the word "standard" and the NASB seems not to use that word at all when rendering this translation? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Fcampos777! The basic meaning of the Hebrew word is to flee or to make flee. It is usally used in a marital sense of a rout or retreat. In Is. 59:19, it is used in what is called a Polel stem. This basically intensifies the thought expressed by the verb. In the Enhanced Strongs, the Polel form is translated as "to drive out." Thus, the thought of the verse seems fairly clear, when the enemy comes in like a flood, the Lord will drive them or rout them by His power. I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
