AMPLIFIED 2015 | Isaiah 49:16 "Indeed, I have inscribed [a picture of] you on the palms of My hands; Your city walls [Zion] are continually before Me. |
Bible Question: I love this verse, the analogy of being engraved on the palms of His hands relating to the cross is awesome. However the next part..."your walls are ever before me.." has me a bit stumped, What are the walls? What does that actually mean? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Hephzibah007! Other related references: Isaiah 26:1; 54:12; 60:18; Revelation 21:10-21 Here is a bit of commentary on this verse.. "..Your walls are continually before Me: The Creator God has His thoughts focused on the welfare of His people (see Psalm 40:5)." (1) "49:16 engraved you on ... my hands. As the names of the tribes of Israel were engraved on stones and fastened to the ephod of the high priest as a memorial before the Lord (Ex. 28:9-12; cf. Song of Solomon 8:6). ever before me. Cf. Psalm 137:5-6." (2) "Isaiah 49:16: Verse 16. Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands-"Behold, on the palms of my hands have I delineated thee"] This is certainly an allusion to some practice, common among the Jews at that time, of making marks on their hands or arms by punctures on the skin, with some sort of sign or representation of the city or temple, to show their affection and zeal for it. They had a method of making such punctures indelible by fire, or by staining. See Clarke on Isa 44:6. It is well known, that the pilgrims at the holy sepulchre get themselves marked in this manner with what are called the ensigns of Jerusalem. See Maundrell, p. 75, where he tells us how it is performed: and this art is practiced by travelling Jews all over the world at this day." (3) "Isaiah 49:16: Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of [my] (u) hands; thy (x) walls [are] continually before me. (u) Because I would not forget you. (x) Meaning, the good order of policy and discipline." (4) Blessings to you, Makarios (1) The Nelson Study Bible, New King James Version, 1997, Thomas Nelson Publishers, Earl D.
