Subject: rose of Sharon or Rose of Sharon? |
Bible Note: Hi Searcher56, When I first looked at Song of Solomon this past week with a look at "spiritualizing" the pronouns, I saw the "I am" and immediately underlined it as Deity. I didn't count the rose or the lily, thinking that it may be speaking of Him being in the likeness of men and LIKE a rose and lily. After counting the "My darling" of verse 2, I was satisfied with having the (Beloved) of verse three as my "subject sentence" so to speak. Earlier today, after hearing the program on the radio I looked more closely at my NASB Study Bible margin and had missed the fact that 2:1 is the Bride speaking. Now, looking at MacArthur's Study Bible I see that the "am" is in italics so it is somehow not in the Hebrew. I don't know the language and don't know how that works. Since it is the Bride speaking I don't want to "underline" or "count" any of the capitalized or uncapitalized pronouns in the verse. So now, with the "I [am]" of verse one not counted, my "subject sentence or pronoun" has been moved down to verse three where it talks of being in (His) shade. I go with "apricot", the alternate reading in the margin of the NASB Study Bible. So they are sitting underneath the fig tree; an apricot being a fig. 1) Song of Solomon:2:3, "Like an *apricot tree among the trees of the forest, So is my Beloved among the young men. In (His) shade I took great delight and sat down, and His fruit was sweet to my taste. He has brought me to His banquet hall, And His banner over me is love. Sustain me with raisin cakes, Refree me with *apricots, Because I am lovesick. Let His left hand be under my head And His/right hand embrace me." Song: 8:3, "Let His left hand be under my head, And His/ right hand embrace me." 1 Kings 4:25, "So Judah and Israel lived in safety, every man under his vine and his fig tree, from Dan even to Beersheba, all the days of Solomon. ... 29 Now (God) gave Solomon wisdom and very great discernment and breadth of mind, like the sand that is on the seashore. 30 And Solomon's wisdom surpassed the wisdom of all the sons of the east and all the wisdom of Egypt." 2 Kings 18:31, "Do not listen to Hezekiah, for thus says the king of Assyria, "Make your peace with me and come out to me, and eat each of his vine and each of his fig tree and drink each of the water of his own cistern, 32 until I [the king] come and take you away to a land like your own land,..." But do not listen to Hezekiah, when he misleads you, saying, "The (Lord) will deliver us." Micah 4:3,4, "And (He) will judge between many peoples And render decisions for mighty, distant nations. Then they will hammer their swords into plowshares And their spears into pruning hooks; Nation will not lift up sword against nation, And never again will they train for war. 4 And each of them will sit under his vine And under his fig tree, With no one to make them afraid, For the mouth of the Lord of hosts has spoken." John 1:48, "Nathaniel said to Him, "How do You know me?" (Jesus) answered and said to him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you." John 1:50, "(Jesus) answered and said to him, "Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You shall see greater things than these." 2) So Searcher and EdB I hope that you see that I believe that we can "spiritualize" the Song of Solomon and compare it to other Scriptures. The "rose of Sharon" has no other verse to compare it to according to Makarios when he was talking about the "fragrances found in the Song of Solomon", by the way. From the heart, Ray |
