AMPLIFIED 2015 | Ecclesiastes 9:9 Live joyfully with the wife whom you love all the days of your fleeting life which He has given you under the sun--all the days of vanity and futility. For this is your reward in life and in your work in which you have labored under the sun. |
Bible Question:
why has the amplified version of this verse stated life as "vain"? also, the NIV stated life as "meaningless"? why is this? |
Bible Answer: Hello sam, The Hebrew word for 'vain' is hebel. It carries the meaning of: meaninglessness emptiness, futility, uselessness, i.e., what is of no use on the basis of being futile and lacking in content. [Dictionary of Biblical Languages With Semantic Domains] Here's how 3 other translations render Eccl. 9:9- ESV- "Enjoy life with the wife whom you love, all the days of your vain life that he has given you under the sun, because that is your portion in life and in your toil at which you toil under the sun." YLT- "See life with the wife whom thou hast loved, all the days of the life of thy vanity, that He hath given to thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity, for it is thy portion in life, even of thy labour that thou art labouring at under the sun." NASB- "Enjoy life with the woman whom you love all the days of your fleeting life which He has given to you under the sun; for this is your reward in life and in your toil in which you have labored under the sun." Ultimately, it was the choice of translators in dealing with the text. The words vain and meaningless are essentially synonymous- interchangable. I hope this helps, BradK |
