NASB | Proverbs 30:9 That I not be full and deny You and say, "Who is the LORD?" Or that I not be in want and steal, And profane the name of my God. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Proverbs 30:9 So that I will not be full and deny You and say, "Who is the LORD?" Or that I will not be poor and steal, And so profane the name of my God. [Deut 8:12, 14, 17; Neh 9:25, 26; Job 31:24; Hos 13:6] |
Bible Question: If I were to say "Oh my God" in a happy or excited way, is that still using the Lords name in vain? Or is it only when you say it with anger or frustration? I realize that this may be a silly question, but I do this and wonder after the fact if I just used His name in vain and then say "Oh my God I'm sorry Lord" and use it again! |
Bible Answer: I "feel" that; "Yes, it is bad. Why? Because what are you doing when you say this? You are exclaiming something about God, to God or by God. That isn't what God had in mind when he said you need to worship him. You should be humble to the LORD, reverent in your aproach to Him. Happy, Yes, but never just blurting something out! It's a conditioned reflex, just as the cursewords are. Just train yourself to say something like: "Good Golly!" or "Wow!" and you'll be much happier. For scripture see Exodus xx:7; Deu v:11; Psa cxxxix:20 And as the BBE translates Proverbs xxx:9 " For fear that if I am full, I may be false to you and say, Who is the Lord? or if I am poor, I may become a thief, using the name of my God wrongly. " Because to do something in vain is to by defination is something that is: 1. Empty; worthless; having no substance, value or importance. When you say, "Oh! My God!" you are doing just that, saying something as an explamation that actually has no more importance than simply saying: "Wow!" |
