Bible Question (short): Luke 21:32 "geneav" translated in AMP?

Question (full): In Luke 21:32 I understand that Bible scholars have different opinions as to what Jesus was referring to here as "this generation".
But in the Amplified version of the Bible it says: "Truly I tell you, this generation (those living at that definite period of time) will not perish and pass away until all has taken place."
I looked up "generation" in a Greek lexicon and not being a Greek/biblical scholar, still seem to find that you could interpret that Greek word "geneav" to not mean "at that definite period of time"...which makes me wonder about the Amplifed version--how do they decide how to interpret certain words/passages such as here??
