AMPLIFIED 2015 | Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go [teaching him to seek God's wisdom and will for his abilities and talents], Even when he is old he will not depart from it. [Eph 6:4; 2 Tim 3:15] |
Bible Question: I was wondering what others opinions are on raising children in God. I'm having trouble drawling the line with Tv and video games and was wondering how others went about drawing the line. What exactly is the role of a parent in raising a child in God's word? |
Bible Answer: Greetings MsDudda21, Ephesians 6:4; Proverbs 22:6 and 22:13-14 all speak of discipline and training in the parent/child relationship. But perhaps 2 Timothy 1:5 and 3:15 are best when educating us how we should 'draw the line' when it comes to the activities of children: "I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well." (2 Tim. 1:5, ESV) "and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus." (2 Tim. 3:15, ESV) In these two passages is shown the true fruition of Proverbs 22:6, in that, as a child, Timothy studied Scripture (2 Tim. 3:15), which trained him up in righteousness (2 Tim. 3:16), equipping him to become the man of God that he became. And he was led to do so, as a child, by the steadfast example of his mother and grandmother. Therefore, I suggest getting children started early in studying the Word so that they will very early on become acquainted with God's Word, so that year after year it will become their one written source of inspiration, and become where they turn to in their darkest hours of need as they grow older.
