Bible Question:
Hi - my friend just asked me about this verse and I was stumped! Here's what she wrote: "I was reading Proverbs the other day, 17 to be exact, and it says (verse 8) A bribe is a charm to the one who gives it/ wherever he turns he succeeds. It gave the Old Testament reference of Ex 23:8 which says accepting bribes if wrong. Then prov. 17:23 says bribes are accepted by the wicked to pervert justice.... So that made me think of Mark, b/c we learned that causing others to sin is wrong and you should be thrown into the ocean with a millstone tied around your neck.. anyway.. all this fits together b/c if its wrong to accept bribes, but its okay (and even good) to give them.. how does that work? Or am I misinterpreting things? I just wanted another opinion." So what do you think? What is King Solomon trying to say about bribes? Is he making a moral statement about them or just telling it like it is? |
Bible Answer: I believe what it is saying is that the owner of the bribe (wrongly)thinks he is offering something that is so valuable because it has worked well for him many times, but in the eyes of God he is offering a temptation to sin and a stumbling block that will bring judgement upon himself and those who accept it. The NASB study Bible says of Prov 17:8 "A sad commentary on human behavior" At times it may become a temporary fix that will fail under stress (Prov 18:16-17) |
