NASB | Exodus 20:7 ¶ "You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Exodus 20:7 ¶ "You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain [that is, irreverently, in false affirmations or in ways that impugn the character of God]; for the LORD will not hold guiltless nor leave unpunished the one who takes His name in vain [disregarding its reverence and its power]. |
Bible Question: The following example is fiction. So lets say I stole money from a friend and my sister told my mother. I tell my mother this is not true. So she makes me swear on God's name I didn't steal any money. All a while I had actually stole the money. Now a scenario like this happened but it was a little more serious. Now as I kid I remember someone telling me if you swore on God's name to something false you would not be forgiven. Now I am obviously very sorry about this and am repenting. But that fear still remains, that I can never be forgiven. |
Bible Answer: Dear Rebekeh, I believe the related verse to your situation is Exodus 20:7. Note that it is not about sin that cannot be forgiven, but he who commits the sin must be punished. So, if you repent of your sin and turn away from it, God will forgive. The only unpardonable sin is recorded in Matthew 12:32. However, the Bible warns us not to make swear so casually. To learn more about the teaching on swearing, you may do a word search by typing "swear" on the Bible Text search box and check on the books of Leviticus, Numbers and Matthew. Remember, do not read only a bible verse. Proper understanding needed in accordance with its context. Shalom Azure |
