Bible Question: is this done often? why not use the name instead of a title such as Lord? What is the English equivalent to it? The translators were not forbidden were they? |
Bible Answer: Dear jolo, Yes, the Jewish practice is still observed today. When vowels were added to the Hebrew, the Jewish scholars were uncertain about the proper vowels to use. So instead, they applied the same vowels as were used in the word Adonai. The result was the word we commonly hear used, Jehovah. By the the time the error was straightened out, the word Jehovah had become so common that it was impossible to make the correction. The English equivalent of Yhwh is I AM; the English equivalent of Adonai is Lord. I deem that any name is inadequate. Perhaps that is why the Lord has so many qualifiers throughout Scripture.
