NASB | Psalm 65:1 There will be silence before You, and praise in Zion, O God, And to You the vow will be performed. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Psalm 65:1 To You belongs silence [the submissive wonder of reverence], and [it bursts into] praise in Zion, O God; And to You the vow shall be performed. |
Bible Question: I am so curious about the extremely differently worded scripture of Psalm 65:1 in the Amplified as compared to the other popular versions. The only one that comes close to the Amplified's wording is the NASB. However the particular words "the submissive wonder of reverence which bursts forth into praise" isn't implied remotely in any other translation, so I would love to know how this made it into the final the Amplified translation. I ask, because I am doing a study on silence and these words used in the Amplified version (based on the whole verse) seem to give an actual definition of silence, which I find completely fascinating! |
Bible Answer: Dear nancilynne, Welcome to the forum! Thank you for drawing our attention to this Psalm. You might also look to the corresponding Psalm 62. It is interesting that the Psalms were edited in arrangement by unknown scribes of ancient times. Consequently, their sequence contains significance for us. Thus, while studying the context of a particular verse within a psalm is essential, it is often helpful to observe the context of each psalm relative to the ones near it. As I read your comment, I couldn't help but be reminded that doctrine always gives rise to doxology. Therefore, as you work on this study of silence, take care to rightly grasp the underlying doctrine of each passage. For example, here in Psalm 65:1, the silence (a behavior) is given rise from the nature of the object (God Himself). Understanding what is being said about God will then properly give rise to the significance of silence. In other words, careful not to look at it the other way around! :-) By the way, this might be helpful tool for you to use: http://www.biblestudytools.com/psalms/65-1-compare.html In Him, Doc |
