Bible Question: Is the prayer of Jesus in the garden, "not My will but Yours be done" (Luke 22:42) an example of "delighting in the LORD?" Can we understand suffering in this context? I'm wondering if seeking His kingdom and His righteousness first, also goes along here? Any insight would be appreciated. |
Bible Answer: Dear Momma, I am convinced that suffering is a part of the christian life, whether it be physically, emotionally, chastening or trials. Many christ- tians believe that suffering is evil and originates from the devil, while good health wealth and happiness come from God. This is true to a certain extent. " every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of light... (Js 1:17). Consider this verse, " Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers" (3 Jn 2). Every child of God must experience suffering in some form. This will result in humility and change of attitude towards other sufferers. Paul writes, " The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God. And if children, then heirs-heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him that we may be glorified together ( Rom 8:16-17). Spiritual growth results from suffering and trials. James states, " Count it all but joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing" ( Js 1:2-4). The author of the book of Hebrews suggests that we look to Jesus as an encouraging example of suffering. "Looking to Jesus who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame...( Heb 12:2). Our Lord is indeed the remarkable example! Mamma, Jesus who understands the agonies of suffering has offered His compassion and help to every suffering child of God. Jesus said, " Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and my burden is light ( Matt 11: 29-30). God bless you. Ptr |
