Subject: Delight and Desires! |
Bible Note: Delight and Desires! It has been eleven years since I had a newborn baby in my arms. But now, with the birth of our first grandchild, I have discovered that you really don’t forget what to do, or how to do it; love comes naturally; caring is remembered – it’s like riding a bike! Although you can never recapture the initial “awe” of the firstborn, the first grandchild comes surprisingly close! I admit I’m a little rusty on developmental aspects of childrearing, but I do know that although newborns can see, they cannot really focus for quite a while. And aside from sleeping through the night, I also know that the first response all parents long for is a smile. When Garett was several weeks old, I was actively seeking to capture his attention with words and facial expressions. He had smiled for Mommy, now it was “my turn!” No matter what I did, I could not engage him; he seemed intent to look anywhere except my face! I was disappointed and a little frustrated –“Be patient,” I consoled myself, “good things come to those who wait!” Sure enough, the next time I had an opportunity to baby-sit and “play,” I was rewarded with not only smiles, but little coos as well! Can you imagine my joy? And God reminded me that He feels the same way too . . . The eyes of the Lord see us all; and He knows each one of us by name! Our heavenly Father is actively seeking our attention, longing for us to gaze in His direction. He calls to us, and inclines his ear to hear our voice. Oh that we would catch a glimpse of Him and seek to see . . . That is what the Lord desires; that we delight in Him. It starts with a simple recognition and response. This is just what I experienced with my grandson. Yet when we respond to the presence of God, it is He who rewards us! His face is full of love. His smile is warm like a welcome and His words are comforting and affirming. It’s easy to “delight” in that isn’t it? |
