NASB | Psalm 2:12 Do homage to the Son, that He not become angry, and you perish in the way, For His wrath may soon be kindled. How blessed are all who take refuge in Him! |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Psalm 2:12 Kiss (pay respect to) the Son, so that He does not become angry, and you perish in the way, For His wrath may soon be kindled and set aflame. How blessed [fortunate, prosperous, and favored by God] are all those who take refuge in Him! |
Bible Question:
Concerning Psalm 2:12, any Greek or Hebrew experts out there? Why on earth does the NASB translate this "Do homage to the Son," while every other translation uses "Kiss the Son," and the Hebrew word here -- as far as I can tell from my lexicons -- is the word for "kiss"? I know that some ancient manuscripts use "do homage" but the Hebrew word still seems to be "kiss." I thought the NASB was the "most literal"; in this case, though, it does not seem to be. ????? waldo |
Bible Answer: Greetings Waldo! I'm not an expert, but you are right! :-) The Hebrew word is 'nashaq' and it means 'to kiss.' There is historical evidence that one might kiss the feet of the son of the king as an act of homage. This definitely seems to be the implication of the Psalm - that the kings of the earth had better respect the Lord's Son. We know from hindsight that this Psalm is speaking of Christ! I think the translation is a good dynamic equivalent translation, but not very literal! ;-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
