Subject: Thomas Watson on Hypocrisy |
Bible Note: Greetings Doc, The word hypocrites, as I have been lead to understand it, came to us from a theatrical word, spoken by the Athenian Greeks and later carried over to the Koine Greek. The word originated as a result of the actors speaking on stage at such a distance that the mood of the actor couldn’t be distinguished from a long distance; so, in order to express the mood the actor would wear a wax mask to convey the mood of the moment; one of smiling, happy, or frowning, the sad face; and thus the word, hupokrites, or speaking from behind the wax mask. The two expressions of mood are still used today as the symbol of the theater. This was also something that I picked up from Pastor Bob Thieme. Have a great day, CDBJ |
